“Shelter” is a short video by Porter Robinson, with music by Robinson and Madeon. As Robinson describes it –

Shelter tells the story of Rin, a 17-year-old girl who lives her life inside of a futuristic simulation completely by herself in infinite, beautiful loneliness. Each day, Rin awakens in virtual reality and uses a tablet which controls the simulation to create a new, different, beautiful world for herself. Until one day, everything changes, and Rin comes to learn the true origins behind her life inside a simulation.

It’s pretty cool. I liked it.

I was told about the video in the fall of 2017, and I thought it was good. But something kept sticking in my mind.

Soon after, I took that idea that wouldn’t stop and made a new version of the video.* I replaced the audio with a classic song, and the lyrics fit the theme very well. Better than I thought they would.

This came out pretty well. What really struck me is how well the music synced up with the video. The lyrics even more so. It’s almost like the song was written for the film.

Something else to notice. Here’s the original Tears For Fears video. In both videos, at the same point in the song (3:09 in my video, 2:13 in the TFF video, but both are the same point in the audio), the characters go for a walk in the trees. Coincidence, but a cool one.

Also note that around 3:51 in the Tears For Fears video, poor Roland takes a paper airplane right to the eye. Great song and video, though.

*And then life interfered and I forgot about the video for a long time. So here it is, 9 years later.
